Do blue light glasses really work?
By Dirk en Nick ·
There is no strong evidence that blue light glasses prevent eye strain when working on screens. What does help: looking away regularly and blinking consciously. You should choose blue light glasses mainly for comfort and style.
According to the best available research, probably not for tired eyes. A 2023 Cochrane review summarizing 17 studies concluded that glasses with a blue light filter are unlikely to reduce eye strain from screen use in the short term. People who wear them do so mainly for comfort and style.
What then causes tired eyes when using a screen?
Mainly because you blink less and stare at the same distance for a long time. Your eyes dry out and the muscles responsible for focusing don't get a break. Screens do emit blue light, but much less than daylight.
What does help with tired eyes?
- The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 6 meters away for 20 seconds.
- Position your screen at arm's length and just below eye level.
- Blink consciously, especially when concentrating.
- If your symptoms persist, have your eyes tested. Sometimes prescription glasses are the real solution.
Does blue light affect your sleep?
Light in the evening, and blue light in particular, can affect your biological clock. However, the effect of a screen is smaller than is often suggested. Using your phone's night mode and putting your screen away earlier are simpler steps.
Why does Shadeclub sell blue light glasses then?
Because many people like wearing light glasses while using a screen. We sell the TONI and FOLD for their comfort and style, without making medical claims. See the blue light collection.
